Andaz Singapore

Singapore

A big-name hotel mightn’t be the first place you’d expect to see conscious, planet-friendly practices at play, but Andaz Singapore is proving that bigger can do better.

Andaz Singapore, a concept hotel by Grand Hyatt Singapore, boasts all the best features of a Singapore city hotel: a view of the city’s sparkling skyline from its infinity pool, elegant furnishings and sleek interiors, top-notch service and a bevy of refined dining spaces. But this big hotel is also paying attention to the little details – in the name of making a big difference.

Throughout the hotel, thoughtful, energy-saving design features are evident. From the outside of this Green Mark Gold Plus accredited building, with its low-emissivity glass and clever, natural-light-giving honeycomb facade, the structure is designed to self heat and self cool. Solar control dots on the windows reduce heat, glare and UV absorption and drastically reduces the amount of air conditioning used in the hotel. And, reclaimed water in the cooling tower means Singapore’s fresh water supply is preserved.

From the vantage point of its view-enhancing rooftop bar, glass panels bring in daylight and minimise artificial light usage too. Inside the hotel, eco-friendly paints, air-cleaning plants and energy-efficient lighting have been used to further reduce the hotel’s footprint.

When it comes to sourcing food for its restaurants, Andaz Singapore uses a low carbon footprint producer to source its vegetables, its eggs are cage-free and the hotel collaborates with the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) to make sure its seafood is sustainably sourced. Of course, paper straws are used in place of plastic at this conscious hotel.

When it comes to in-room services, guests must specify that they’d like their bed linens changed – in another effort to conserve water. Bottles and coffee pods are responsibly recycled, wooden and paper cards are used to access rooms and amenities are recyclable (including bamboo toothbrushes).

Each room epitomises pared-back, contemporary style and reflects the modern urbanity of the neighbourhood below, beckoning travellers to step out and explore.
